With the HomePod set to arrive in the homes of early adopters in the coming days, reviews of the smart speaker have started to arrive online. alongside those reviews comes news that Apple has given a name to the technology that will allow two HomePods to be paired and then automatically balance their audio outputs to create a full stereo-like experience, once the software update to add it is released.
That feature will be known as FullRoom, according to Apple’s website.
It is, of course, crucial to note that the fact the audio will be stereo-like is a crucial one. Those aforementioned reviews have confirmed that the HomePod will not allow users to select which device is used as the left channel and which is the ideal once the FullRoom feature goes live, with Apple instead saying that the HomePods will use beamforming capabilities to create an immersive soundstage that mimics stereo sound.
According to Matthew Panzarino, FullRoom will be available before the multi-room audio support that is waiting for AirPlay 2 to become available. dates for neither feature have been confirmed yet, with both provided as “coming later this year” on Apple’s HomePod web page. It had been assumed that both features would arrive simultaneously, but according to Panzarino, we can expect FullRoom to arrive soonest.
The HomePod goes on sale this Friday, February 9th in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, with additional countries receiving it later this year.
Those seeking to place orders now can still do so, although supplies have just started to be outstripped by demand, indicating a Friday delivery date may not be possible depending on your location.
